I decided to use the Windows Live SkyDrive technology to host my files and photos. It provides 25-Gb of storage and should be enough to last for quite some time. I am in the process of creating the album structure and uploading files to this new site.
2009 is, of course, history. Progress has been made with my Chisago County cemetery project, with 28 of the 43 cemeteries already online. I started auditing, transcribing, and photographing the small ones first. This allowed me to develop a custom cataloging system on the fly, tweaking the Excel workbook features as new issues arose. I am taking a different approach with the largest cemeteries in the county. I have approached the Kahbakong, the Chisago Lake Hillside, and the Fairview cemeteries looking for pre-existing records of interments. The first two cemeteries volunteered a copy of their computerized files. The Fairview, unfortunately, has not made the transition from written records to a computerized system.
Because of my work with the Chisago County Historical Society I was presented with their "Historian of the Year" award at the Annual Membership Meeting. It was a total surprise! Looking back over the year a lot of progress has been made, including creating a Reference Library Index. Now it is possible to search or review this online index to see what books and materials are available when pursuing a history project.
Looking forward into 2010 there is movement to update the CCHS website and implement a Shopping Cart system to help raise funds. The Society sells merchandise at local events, but putting the products online will expand the awareness of these items. In addition, the Heritage magazine is being redesigned and will be available in color and PDF format. The website will need to be updated to support memberships, sales, and access to "members only" items.
had not received a QSL Bureau shipment in a very long time. Typically many cards roll in because of all the contests I particpate in. I shot an email to the bureau manager and discovered there were nearly three pounds of cards waiting for me. I sent a $15 check for postage. A couple months later I received a shipment with 348 QSL cards enclosed.
